Entre las ramas

The works brought together here create a space of resonance where painting, collage and material engage in dialogue through intuition, silence, and a profound attentiveness to that which remains beyond the noise of everyday life. The exhibition proposes an experience of slow looking, in which nature ceases to be merely landscape and instead becomes a place of thought and presence.

For Palo Pez, inhabiting the space between the branches means living exposed to the elements. It is a leap into the void of immensity, a constant vertigo that cannot be soothed because of the uncertainty it entails. There is no shelter, no cave capable of protecting the vulnerability of having been born. At times, we may walk along branches that shorten the journey, but the path will always be fleeting. The only journey we are guaranteed thus becomes a kind of infinite, uncontrollable expanse.

There is not a single straight line in a tree. Nor will we find one in the space between the branches. One of the great illusions of our time is the belief that we can avoid this uncertain place and always walk along branches that will support us. Yet between the branches there is no void, just as the silences that give meaning to everything within the dense foliage are not empty spaces.

It is from this reflection that the dialogue with the work of Caspar Jansen emerges. The German artist, based in Mallorca, develops a highly subtle form of painting in which colour, transparency and materiality create surfaces open to contemplation.

His work stems from a desire to recover balance in the face of a world saturated with distractions and constant influences. Inspired by the light and colours of Mallorca, his paintings invite us to slow down our gaze and inhabit a more unhurried sense of time, transforming the canvas into a space of calm, contemplation and presence. His minimalist language finds in imperfection a form of serene and essential beauty. His compositions do not represent nature; rather, they seem to breathe alongside it, inviting a silent and sensory experience.

Palo Pez’s works combine drawing, inks and natural pigments, plaster and fibres, in dialogue with the botanical imagery that gives the exhibition its title.

Since 2009, working under the pseudonym Palo Pez, he has developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning illustration, photography, graphic design, video and theatrical performance, with more than twenty-five solo and group exhibitions, including Vacía (Museum of Nature of Cantabria, 2024) and Vela la llama (Enclave Pronillo Chapel, 2021). In 2022, he undertook a residency at Centro Botín to create El loco de la habitación 109, in homage to the centenary of the birth of poet José Hierro, and in 2023 he curated the exhibition El Agua Espera at the Palacete del Embarcadero. He was co-founder and artistic co-director of El Temporal (2021–2024) and president of the XCreativos collective (2013–2019).

Caspar Jansen lives and works in Mallorca. His works have been presented in international exhibitions and art fairs, including in Shanghai, London, Sydney, Brussels, Amsterdam, Munich and Mallorca. His work is held in the collection of Tiffany & Co., as well as in numerous private collections across more than twenty-five countries.

Entre las ramas (Among the Branches) offers no answers, but rather a way of being in the world. A place to pause, observe and accept that, as with trees, beauty never follows a straight line.
